Pokémon Go is creating a stir at Victoria Hall this summer!

Did you know that Victoria Hall houses fossil footprints of a dinosaur?

Fossil footprints of Cheirotherium, a unique dinosaur discovered in 1838 at the then local quarry in Storeton, are displayed at Victoria Hall. When workers at the quarry in Scott’s Wood were excavating some 60ft below the surface they came across a layer of marl in which they discovered the prints of this species of prehistoric reptile. These are now known to be the only evidence that Cheirotherium existed – the name means ‘hand creature’. It is disappointing that no other evidence such as skeletal fragments or teeth have been found, so it is impossible to deduce the creature’s form. The footprints measure 8” by 5”.

The unique fossil prints can be viewed by appointment. A donation of £1 per viewing is suggested. The funds will be used to redecorate the area where the fossil is exhibited and to redisplay the object for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.
