Ellis’ Big Day!

Victoria Hall Community Trust’s first family fun day took place on 6 July in Higher Bebington. The fundraising event was the idea of 12 year old Ellis Borrington, the nephew of the trust’s chairperson, who has got to know the hall over the years. The trust was delighted that the Mayor Cllr Dave Mitchell, who is local to the area and over the years has enjoyed many happy occasions at Victoria Hall, was able to attend the event.

Highlights of the day included performances by local band Distinction and Lancelyn Dance School. There was also the opportunity for those attending to try out some folk dance lead by Bebington Folk Dance Club.

Twelve year old Alex Ikoku-Croft of Distinction said “it was great to have the opportunity of performing our first official gig as a band at this event, especially knowing that the Beatles performed here in the 1960s. We really enjoyed the event and were pleased that there were a lot of people there to see us.”

Families had the opportunity to learn about honey bees and spiders through the participation of Deehurst Apiaries and the Arachnological Society. And youngsters also got the opportunity to climb aboard a fire engine and learn about fire fighting courtesy of Merseyside Fire and Rescue.

Funds raised by the event will go towards the creation of a garden to the rear of the hall for benefit of the charity’s regular hirers and visitors.

Elizabeth Hebron-Shields, the chairperson of the trust said: “We were delighted when Ellis came up with the idea of holding a family fun day at the hall and have enjoyed working with him to organise and deliver it. As we approach the first anniversary of the founding of Victoria Hall Community Trust, we are very pleased to have been able to host the event and our thanks go to Ellis, and the local community members and businesses that helped to make the event such a successful and happy occasion.”

Ellis who valued the experience of planning the event with the hall’s trustees and helping to run it on the day said:” The day was a great success, with lots of people participating.  It was a real privilege to greet the Mayor on arrival, run the tombola stall and announce the raffle winners. I’d recommend anyone else my age to have ago at volunteering in the community”.
